Electronics go for the gold

Ten marine electronics products vied for the coveted NMEA Technology Award in 2019. While only one of the nominated products could win the prize, the field included some very innovative equipment. The winner received its share of coverage and acclaim but not so much the worthy contenders. Here are excerpts from manufacturers’ descriptions of five of the products. We’ll tell you about the rest next week.

Garmin was the first to create a glass-helm design, and we’re excited to bring this stunning appearance to smaller, more affordable displays, like the new GPSMAP 8612xsv, without compromising the premium performance our customers know and depend on. The GPSMAP 8612xsv offers excellent sonar, cartography and connectivity capabilities. It features a 12 inch full HD in-plane switching (IPS) touchscreen display for wider viewing angles, superior clarity and sunlight readability, even with polarized sunglasses. 

The 8612xsv offers built-in support for Garmin’s sonar, including dual-channel 1 kW traditional CHIRP, CHIRP ClearVü and CHIRP SideVü scanning sonars plus built-in support for high-definition scanning sonar (no black box required). It also supports the award-winning Panoptix LiveScope system and the entire Panoptix all-seeing sonar line.

The device is preloaded with Garmin exclusive BlueChart g3 coastal charts and LakeVü g3 inland maps, which bring Navionics data as well as Auto Guidance technology built-in to the unit for the first time. The chartplotter includes a premium-performance processor for our fastest map drawing, superior networking, video distribution and more. 

The TSM810C is an 8 inch dedicated touchscreen that includes Maretron’s N2KView vessel monitoring and control software. The N2KView software allows you to configure as many favorite screens as you want with exactly the information you want to see. The TSM810C provides a simple touch interface for monitoring and controlling critical systems from anywhere on the vessel.

The TSM810C is ruggedized for marine use and includes a solid-state disk drive to withstand the pounding associated with waves. And since the TSM810C only dissipates 10 watts, there is no need for internal cooling fans that are noisy and wear out, causing electronics to overheat and fail. The TSM810C can be mounted outside, given the high-bright screen and waterproof front.

As an alternative to controlling the TSM810C through the touchscreen, the TSM810C includes two USB ports for connecting keyboards, mice, or trackballs. The TSM810C also has an Ethernet port for connecting Internet Protocol (IP) cameras for viewing within the N2KView software. Lastly, the TSM810C contains two completely isolated CAN bus connectors (M12) for easy connection to single or redundant NMEA 2000® networks.

Microwave-based intrusion sensors are designed to overcome the physical limitations of traditional PIR sensors, by offering a 3D scan that significantly improves reliability in outdoor environments, and virtually eliminates false-positives. 

An integrated next-gen GPS chipset forms the backbone of X2's vessel tracking and precision geofence/anchor alarm.  Nautic Alert's geofence detects unexpected movement in as little as 50 feet and auto-adjusts based on real-time signal strength to eliminate false alerts when other solutions show movement.

The NavPilot 300 autopilot takes a well-established product to the next level with innovative new features not seen before in a pilot. The NavPilot series has been widely acclaimed for its innovative steering automation, utilizing a ‘self-learning’ algorithm to adapt to the boat’s unique handling characteristics. This time around, we taught the NavPilot 300 some new tricks to make a boat’s handling and ride more comfortable. It is an NMEA 2000 device designed for center consoles with outboard engines and drive-by-wire systems on small- to mid-sized boats. 

The NavPilot 300 features a single-DIN, 4.1 inch color LCD and a new Gesture Controller. The Gesture Controller is a real game-changer, which allows you to shoot in any direction, controlling the vessel’s steering from anywhere onboard within 10 meters of the helm. The pilot incorporates Furuno’s popular SABIKI mode, as well as four FishHunter turning maneuvers. Anyone remember the Standard Horizon GX6500 that was introduced 3 years ago?

Thanks for the comment and my apologies for our delay in responding. In checking with NMEA, immediate availability was not a criteria for the Best New Product award. Cortex also took an IBEX award and an honorable mention in the DAME award competition--but I don't know whether their criteria included availability. In our humble opinion, a product should be on the market in order to qualify for a product award."
Jp:(8/11/2018 5:28:29 PM) "I have a 2018 Yamaha f40 la and Humminbird helix 7 di , I would like to leverage the nema 2000 capability of the helix 7 to display engine info, what do I need , Humminbird does have a gateway and lowrance makes a Yamaha nema cable, but I'm reading connectors are proprietary . How can I get what is needed?

Since these products are not NMEA 2000 certified there is little assurance that they will share data with each other.

AC/DC grounding distance:(8/2/2018 1:29:35 AM) "What about the grounding points of AC /DC systems? can they be grounded at the same point?
If one system has both AC and DC can they both be grounded to a common buss-bar that has only one conection to the hull?

Here's what Ed Sherman, electric tech guru at the American Boat & Yacht Council, said:

The ultimate goal should always be to tie ac and dc grounds together on board at a single point. In ABYC Standard E-11, it is described as “the engine negative terminal or its buss.” It is most commonly done at a buss."
Hard-Over with Brushed APilot Pump:(12/18/2017 5:37:05 PM) "Jim.
What do you mean by ...."Garmin GHP 20 with SmartPump...Because it is a brushless system, it is fail-safe and won’t execute a hard-over turn the way a brushed pump can."

Thanks for the note. Since the description came from Garmin I contacted the company for an explanation. Here's what one of their engineers told me:

On brushed DC actuators, a single-point failure in the drive circuit (shorted wire or blown component inside the controller) could cause the motor to run full speed in one direction and take the rudder all the way to one rail. A brushless actuator relies on timing-controlled commutation, so a short or component fail would cause the actuator to stop moving rather than moving at full speed.
